What do employee IDs say about your company?

They send a message that you care about the security of your people, buildings and assets. It also ensures a uniform marketing message with your company logo and/or tag line. Ultimately, there is a positive return on investment that such a photo ID system provides your organization. Some other functions include:

  • Opening closing doors via a Prox or iClass tech card. HID also offers an HID on the Desktop to utilize your tech card + PIN to log into Windows.
  • Clocking in/out is another option using a bar code, mag stripe or access control system already installed in your building.
  • Visitor safety and security with visitor IDs, either personalized with name/photo or generic, depending on your needs and each visitor.
  • Marketing/messaging can also be supported by a uniform visual security tool that includes your company logo and/or tag line.

Oh dear, my printer ribbon is torn!

One of the most common calls we receive is about ID printer ribbons breaking and what do to next. The answer depends on how and how often the ribbon breaks.

In general, the answer is pretty simple: You just tape the ribbon back together, advance the ribbon forward, and resume card printing.

If, however, the ribbon breaks frequently or all the time, there maybe other issues that need attention:

  1. Ensure your driver and firmware is current. This can be found at
  2. Clean the printer including rollers. If the card is slipping or not aligned correctly, the printhead could be breaking the ribbon in the print process.
  3. Calibrate your ribbon sensors by viewing Printing Preferences, removing the ribbon and clicking on “CALIBRATE RIBBON”.
  4. Check your printer settings by viewing Printing Preferences. For example, dye sub values too high can cause ribbon to overheat and break. You can select “DEFAULT” and see if that improves the printing process and then, slowly, increase dye sub intensity.

If you take these steps and continue to have a ribbon break, please give us a call and set up a time for printer service. We can be reached at 317-488-1030 or

Fargo Printers and Alphabet Soup

Honestly, every time someone places an order for a Fargo ID card printer ribbon I’m reminded of alphabet soup. Yes, that orange/yellow soup you ate as a kid (maybe still eat, and I’m not judging if you do) filled with an assortment of letters and numbers. It isn’t hard to imagine why. The ribbons have names like YMCKK, YMCFK, YMCKI and YMCKH. Let’s be honest, that is a mouthful (okay, that was a pretty awful pun).

Ordering these Fargo ribbons might be a little easier if you learned what those letters actually mean. To help with that, these letters mean the following:

  • Y – yellow panel
  • M – magenta panel
  • C – cyan panel
  • K – black resin panel
  • H – heat seal panel
  • F – fluorescing panel
  • I – inhibitor panel

Now depending on which of these letters is included in the ribbon name, those letters will tell you exactly what that particular ribbon does. For example, a YMCK ribbon is capable of printing full color cards while also possessing a resin black panel. This enables the YMCK ribbon to also print barcodes or text that requires a crisp black color. Another example is the YMCFK ribbon. This ribbon contains a fluorescing panel that enables you to produce images that are only visible with ultraviolet light. This provides an end user with a cost effective way to include an anti-counterfeiting security measure within each card produced.

Please give us a call at (317) 488-1030 to learn more about our Fargo brand ribbons, as well as about our Evolis, Zebra and Datacard ribbons. We are happy to walk you through the process, and if you decide to stop by our offices, we will give you a bowl of alphabet soup.

Easy-to-Use, One-Card Solution for Integrated Student Access and Security

Continued growth and expansion of Mercyhurst College signaled the need for a new approach to campus security. The school had constructed “smart” buildings that include fully integrated HVAC, a magstripe Debitek cafeteria system, interactive podiums with presentation systems, wireless and other technology advances. However, neither campus had a student access

control system other than a traditional door locks and keys. Students and faculty had various cards (photo ID, library, cafeteria and copy services) and a new access card would have been the fifth card they carried. Therefore, a more sophisticated access control system was strongly desired for the
campuses. Mercyhurst was looking for a single-card solution that integrated all of their existing card functions with added physical access control. The school also wanted to implement keyless access control, including freshman dorms secured for after hours access and school breaks.
